The Fraser Valley Chapter - #1587 was installed on May
3rd, 2000.
In
1996 Les Dukowski and Graham Leask first began to seriously
introduce the notion that there were many potential Kappans in the
ever growing Fraser Valley region The demand for high quality
professional networking, leadership activities and an increased
university presence were all aspects of the education system to
which Phi Delta Kappa was ideally positioned to respond.
For
a considerable time now our members from the Fraser Valley have
found it increasingly difficult to attend the meetings of the UBC
Chapter. Traffic patterns and volumes have made what was once
a forty minute trip an eighty minute nightmare. This fact, combined
with the greater numbers of interested potential Kappans, convinced
the UBC executive to take the exciting step of creating a club in
the Fraser Valley.
In
the late fall of 1999 the Fraser Valley Club was formally recognized
and an installation date was set for May 3rd, 2000.
The
Chapter was installed by PDK International Executive Director Dr.
George Kersey, District Representative Mr. Dennis Simmons, Area
Coordinator Ms. Joyce Anderson and Fraser Valley Club President Mr.
John Parry.
Earlier in the evening twenty-one new members were initiated
into Phi Delta Kappa. Doug Player (Past President - UBC), Les
Dukowski (Past President - UBC), Bev Sherman (President - Western
Washington, Bellingham), and Jane Hunter (President - UBC) were the
initiating team.
26
Kappans chose to transfer their membership to the new
Chapter.
The
chapter's first Executive was sworn in, the new chapter set the fees
at $99CDN and adopted bylaws..
